Benefits of Oil Pulling

What the heck is oil pulling? Oil pulling is an ancient practice that involves swishing oil, preferebly coconut oil, around in your mouth for 10-30mins a day. I started incorporating this into my daily routine as a less toxic way to whiten my teeth, but later learned so many more of the benefits...

  1. Oral hygiene: Oil pulling is believed to help improve oral health by reducing harmful bacteria in the mouth. The swishing action helps to loosen plaque and debris, promoting cleaner teeth and fresher breath.

  2. Gum health: Oil pulling may aid in maintaining healthy gums by reducing inflammation and preventing gum diseases such as gingivitis. The antimicrobial properties of certain oils, such as coconut oil, can help combat bacteria that contribute to gum problems.

  3. Teeth whitening: Some proponents of oil pulling claim that it can lead to brighter and whiter teeth. While there is limited scientific evidence supporting this claim, the mechanical action of swishing oil in the mouth may help remove surface stains and make teeth appear whiter.

  4. Detoxification: Oil pulling is thought to have detoxifying effects by drawing toxins out of the body through the mouth. The oil supposedly binds to these toxins and is then spit out, eliminating them from the body.

  5. Natural and non-toxic: Many commercial mouthwashes and oral care products contain ingredients like alcohol and artificial chemicals. Oil pulling offers a natural and chemical-free alternative for those who prefer a more holistic approach to oral care.

It's important to note that while many people practice oil pulling and find it beneficial, scientific studies on its effectiveness are limited, and it should not replace regular oral hygiene practices such as brushing, flossing, and visiting the dentist.

Pro Tip For me, I typically oil pull in the morning before or after I brush my teeth. Make sure to spit it out in the garbage NOT the sink. Give a try and see if it makes a difference for you!
